Tips on work with metal clay.

This page is designed for anyone working with metal clay.  I will periodically post tips that others and myself have learned while handling this exciting medium.  Anyone visiting is welcome and encouraged to contribute your experiences.  Send me your tip/s or question/s to my email address  karoz@flash.net.  I will respond as soon as possible.  If I do not have an answer I will research the subject or refer you to someone or someplace that can give you the answer you need.  Questions are always welcome because we all can benefit from the answers.

Tip # 1:
When tumbling a completed piece use about 1 pound of your stainless steel shot in the tumbler barrel instead of the recommended 4 times the total weight of silver pieces to be polished.  I have affirmed this cuts the amount of time needed to polish a tumbled piece.  Just add the recommended polishing fluid (1-inch above to level of the shot) and tumble for one hour then check your piece.  I tumbled my latest dancing figure creation and it came out beautifully smooth and shinny.
Thanks go to Maribeth Meyer for this time saving tip.

Tip # 2

When setting a stone into one of your PMC creations be sure to get all the PMC off the stone before firing.  It has been my experience that the PMC will fuse to a CZ stone.  If it does happen you may be able to remove the PMC but you will run the risk of scratching the stone.

Tip # 3

To remove copper on you silver that was picked up from the pickle pot.  Mix up a fresh batch of pickle solution.  Mix together
half pickle solution and half hydro-peroxide and in another container.  Pour into pickle pot, turn it on and immerse your silver items until the copper is removed.
Passed on to me via Melodie Moshure.  Thanks Mel!
